Chapel Perilous is the definitive biography of Robert Anton Wilson, the novelist, philosopher, futurist, Discordian trickster, and one of the most influential countercultural figures of the late 20th century.
Drawing on previously unpublished archives, private correspondence, rare interviews, and new research, Chapel Perilous traces Wilson’s life from Brooklyn poverty to psychedelic illumination, conspiracy culture, and his ongoing legacy in philosophy, literature, and digital culture.
Both biography and cultural history, the book follows Wilson’s journey through the 1960s underground, the creation of The Illuminatus! Trilogy, his experiments with consciousness, his conflicts with institutions, and the ideas that made him one of the most original American thinkers of his era.
Wilson used the term “Chapel Perilous” to describe a psychological initiatory stage , considering it a crossroads between illumination and madness.
This book explores how Wilson lived inside that space as a thinker who questioned all belief systems, refused dogma, embraced agnosticism, and challenged readers to do the same.
This book was originally slated for publication by MIT Press under the working title:
Chapel Perilous: The Life and Thought Crimes of Robert Anton Wilson.
That edition was never published.
The final and official edition was published in 2024 by Media Heist Publications.
